Investment Strategy and Portfolio Advice in Sydney

Build an investment strategy around your goals, timeframe and financial position. We provide advice on portfolio structure, asset allocation, investment selection and ongoing portfolio management as part of our Wealth Management service.

Investment advice built around your goals

A well structured investment portfolio should reflect what you are investing for, when you may need the money and the level of investment risk that is appropriate for you.

At Private Capital Management, we begin by understanding your financial position, objectives and timeframe. We then consider how your investments should be structured across different asset classes, ownership structures and investment vehicles.

Existing investments are reviewed as part of this process. Where appropriate, investments may be retained, adjusted or replaced after considering factors such as diversification, risk, tax consequences, costs and your broader financial strategy.

Your investment strategy is then reviewed over time as markets, legislation and your circumstances change. This forms part of our ongoing Wealth Management relationship.

What investment strategy covers

  • Asset allocation

Determine an appropriate mix of growth, defensive and cash investments based on your goals, timeframe and attitude to investment risk.

  • Portfolio structure and ownership

Consider how investments are held across personal, joint, company, trust and superannuation structures where relevant to your advice.

  • Income and liquidity

Plan for income requirements and maintain appropriate access to cash so your portfolio can support both current and future needs.

  • Investment selection

Select investments that fit the agreed strategy, with consideration given to diversification, costs, risk, liquidity and the role each investment plays in the portfolio.

  • Review and rebalancing

Review the portfolio over time and rebalance where appropriate to keep it aligned with your strategy, circumstances and investment objectives.

Investments and structures we can consider

Depending on your circumstances and the scope of advice, your investment strategy may consider a range of investments and portfolio structures. These can include:

  • Cash management accounts

Cash accounts used to manage portfolio income, distributions and investment transactions.

  • High interest savings accounts

Cash savings options considered for liquidity, capital stability and competitive interest rates.

  • Term deposits

Fixed term deposits that can provide a known interest rate and capital stability for an agreed period.

  • Bonds and fixed income

Government and corporate fixed income investments that can provide income and diversification within a portfolio.

  • Hybrid securities

Securities with characteristics of both debt and equity, considered carefully for income, issuer risk and portfolio suitability.

  • Australian and international shares

Direct share investments that can provide exposure to company earnings, dividends and long term capital growth.

  • Exchange traded funds

Diversified market exposure through exchange traded investments across asset classes, regions and investment strategies.

  • Managed funds

Professionally managed investment funds that can provide access to specialist managers, markets and asset classes.

  • Separately managed accounts

Professionally managed portfolios where investors retain beneficial ownership of the underlying investments.

  • Share brokerage accounts

Investment accounts used to hold and transact direct listed investments.

  • Investment property

Property considered as part of a broader wealth strategy, including its income, capital growth potential, liquidity and concentration risk.

  • Alternative investments

Where appropriate, exposure to areas such as private equity, private credit, infrastructure, real assets and other alternative strategies.

  • Education bonds

Investment bonds that may be considered for long term education funding objectives, subject to individual circumstances and tax considerations.

  • Superannuation and investment platforms

Superannuation, wrap and investment platforms used to hold, administer and report on investments as part of a broader Wealth Management strategy.

  • Cryptocurrency holdings

Private Capital Management does not provide advice on cryptocurrency or digital assets. If you hold cryptocurrency, you should obtain specialist advice where required. We may take the value of your cryptocurrency holdings into account when understanding your overall financial position, but we do not provide recommendations on buying, selling or holding cryptocurrency.

Our approach to portfolio construction

We believe portfolio construction should begin with your objectives rather than a predetermined investment product.

Depending on your circumstances, a portfolio may use a combination of index based investments, active management and direct investments. The appropriate mix will depend on factors such as your goals, timeframe, risk profile, tax position, liquidity needs and the opportunities available across different markets.

Our role is to explain the strategy, the investments being recommended and the costs and risks involved, so you can make informed decisions about your portfolio.

Common questions about investment strategy

  • Do I have to move my existing investments?

No. We first review what you already hold. Existing investments may be retained where they continue to fit your strategy. If we recommend a change, we explain the reasons for the recommendation and consider the costs, tax consequences and other implications before changes are made.

  • Do you use passive or active investments?

We can use both index based and actively managed investments. The mix will depend on your objectives, the asset class, costs, diversification and where we believe active management may add value. We do not apply the same investment mix to every client.

  • How often is my investment portfolio reviewed?

Your portfolio is reviewed as part of your ongoing Wealth Management service and when there are material changes to your circumstances, objectives or financial position. We also consider whether portfolio changes are appropriate as market conditions and investment opportunities evolve.

  • How do you decide how much investment risk I should take?

We consider your goals, timeframe, financial position, capacity for loss and attitude to investment risk. The aim is to build a portfolio with a level of risk that is appropriate for your circumstances and the outcomes you are seeking.

  • Can you advise on investments I hold outside superannuation?

Yes. Depending on the agreed scope of advice, we can consider investments held personally, jointly and through structures such as companies, trusts and superannuation. We also consider how different investments fit together as part of your broader financial position.
